Pinterest Is A Hit!

Another exciting week in social media, folks! I’ve had some fun trying some new apps, sharing some pictures, and ignoring the politics. G+ has sort of been my hangout this week. I met a couple of really cool folks, one of whom is using social media to fund a great new app for musicians, which will be able to help thousands understand their craft.

The Facebook IPO has people in business and media scrambling to figure out just what to make of it, and every day a new piece of the puzzle becomes clear. One of the big announcements of the week was that the guys with the Big Blue F will be working with companies that help internet start-ups with seed money. As Reported in The Wall Streeet Jounal, “Facebook’s new fbStart program is open to early-stage business investment groups, also known as “seed funds” and business “accelerators,” that have social-media developers in their portfolios. Developers at companies supported by the fbStart partner firms will get an advanced look at new tools and features Facebook is creating for its site. In return, Facebook hopes that some of those start-ups could eventually build a business around its platform.”

Pinterest gets pinned to boards across the board.

OK, so that was a little thick… Talking with my partner, a couple weeks back, we were having one of our “have you checked out so-and-so” discussions, and agreed that picture “pinboard” site, Pinterest, was something to watch out for and showed a lot of potential. Well sure enough my inboxes were full of stories about Pinterest, this week, and I even got an invitation! Yep, it’s still in the invitational stage.

Pinterest is a rather young social site concentrating on images. People share things they like, stuff from life, favorite products, pictures and videos from blogs, you get the point. It has a simple design and layout that is easy on the eyes, and quite engaging. Each time I have visited the site, I have stayed longer than I meant to.        Follow Me on Pinterest

This one really is going to be a big hit, folks! I highly advise giving it a good look, especially if you are into architecture or nature.

Let me know what you think of Pinterest with your comments.

So, Bret, what’s your Social Media Tip this week?

Well, here’s one that came back and caught me by surprise, a few months after the first time I stumbled on it. Yep, I had forgotten all about the extra message box on Facebook, called “Other”.

Facebook Stock Exchange

Big news in Social Media, this week! Facebook has announced that hey are going public – as in “publicly traded” on Wall Street. The initial public offering is scheduled to take place in May.

There has been great anticipation as to just “when” Facebook would make this announcement, and it comes sooner than many thought it would. The young company reached limits on revenue and size for a private busines early last year, but they actually had until April 30 to make the announcement.

Facebook – founded by Mark Zuckerberg – is one of the fastest growing companies in the world. The kid really hit on something! Showing nearly double last year’s numbers, Facebook reported $3.7 billion dollars in revenue, and a $1 billion dollar profit, this fiscal year. Facebook commands 28% of U.S. online ad display, providing a whopping 85% of the company’s income. The IPO makes it seem that they are trying to raise $5billion.

The Saturday Independent Manchester News Manchester TN News, Tullahoma News, Bonnaroo News – Google is Social Media

  | 26 January 2012 vol. 3

Google Is Social Media

It’s been another wild ride on the social media roller-coaster, this week. everytime I opened my email or rss feeds there was a new article about Facebook going public ( i.e. – an initial public offering of stock in the company  )in the near future. The on-line news was full of stories about the impact social sites had on the apparent demise of the controversial SOPA and PIPA bills — pay attention, though, we all know how things have disappeared from the legislative table only to re-appear in the dead of night a few weeks later as finalized law.
What got my attention this week, though was Google’s new privacy policy. Google has cut a path through the SM forest big enough to drive a jet through (betcha thought I would say “truck”). Google Plus (commonly G+) began with private invitations in May of 2011 (this author is pleased to have been among the first ten thousand users – a 1st generation user), and opened to the public in late July. As of December, they reported 62 million users, and the number is growing by several million per month. This is the fastest growth any social site has ever seen! Ya, ya, ya, but what about the privacy policy?

Social media stops bad bills in Congress

Well, I spent a while wondering what to write on this week, and then “SOPA Day” happened. This Wednesday, thousands of online protesters joined together in a unified effort, to get the attention of Congress, and show their displeasure over SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Internet Provider Act). Facebook was full, twitter was buzzing, G + was nonstop, the buzz everywhere was all about SOPA and PIPA, but it wasn’t just social media channels that got involved.

Thousands of sites blacked out their headers, denied access, or even redirected visitors to petition the government officials to vote against SOPA and PIPA. Google blacked out their header, Wikipedia blacked out their front page, WordPress and thousands more participated in a myriad ways. Social media sites were full of conversation, links to news articles. Their were insightful and ranting posts and blogs written by professionals, hacks, and politicians. And there were quite a few surprises. Wednesday, we saw an amazing impact made on the national political scene in one day. Due to the resistance to the bills which was openly displayed all over the next on “SOPA Day”, even co-sponsors of the bills decided to remove their backing! Republicans, and Democrats alike, bailed as fast as they could to distance themselves from the subject. They have proven that they do at least understand the power the net and social media can have.
